A heartbreaking rescue story that touched thousands has found its happy ending. Peter, a severely neglected rabbit abandoned outside the RSPCA Hull & East Riding Animal Care Centre earlier this year, has made a full recovery and now lives happily in a new forever home.
Peter was discovered in the early hours of 24 February after the centre’s 24-hour security monitoring service alerted staff to suspicious activity outside the building. CCTV footage showed a cat litter tray being left at the entrance. Inside, staff found a traumatised and unresponsive rabbit, left without explanation and in an appalling state of health.
Two members of the RSPCA team responded immediately, ensuring Peter received urgent care, warmth, and medical attention. His condition was so poor, the team feared he might not survive the night. But thanks to swift action and dedicated round-the-clock treatment, Peter began to recover.
“Some days in animal rescue truly test your faith in humanity. That night was one of those,” said Fred Owen, CEO of RSPCA Hull & East Riding. “But our team didn’t hesitate. They ensured Peter was safe, warm, and cared for. By morning, he was already showing signs of hope. I couldn’t be prouder.”
Peter’s story quickly spread on social media, where thousands were moved by his ordeal and offered messages of support. Following weeks of rehabilitation, he was renamed Truffle and matched with a loving adopter—joining a family that had already rehomed two other rabbits from the centre.
Now thriving, Truffle is enjoying life as part of a happy trio, bringing joy and laughter to his new home.
“We’re so grateful that Peter was left somewhere safe, where we could help him,” Fred added. “His recovery and new life are thanks to our incredible team—and to every person who shared his story, donated, or simply cared. This is the power of community.”
The RSPCA Hull & East Riding team hopes Truffle’s transformation will remind people of the importance of responsible pet ownership and inspire continued support for local animal welfare work.
