PetKind

Helping create a kinder future for animals through education and community engagement.

PetKind is the animal welfare education programme from RSPCA Hull & East Riding, helping children, young people, families and communities understand animals, care for pets responsibly and become champions for animal welfare.

We believe that preventing animal suffering starts with knowledge, understanding and kindness.

Every day, our team sees the impact that neglect, poor understanding and irresponsible pet ownership can have on animals. Through PetKind, we want to help prevent those situations from happening in the first place.

Because a kinder future for animals starts with a better understanding of what they need.

What is PetKind?

PetKind brings animal welfare to life through engaging, practical and age-appropriate education.

Our sessions help children and young people understand what animals need to live happy, healthy lives, while encouraging empathy, responsibility and respect.

We work with schools, youth groups, community organisations and families across Hull and the East Riding, taking animal welfare education into the places where people live, learn and grow.

PetKind builds on our experience of delivering animal welfare education in schools and communities, while creating a broader programme focused on prevention, responsible pet ownership and building a kinder community for animals.

PetKind helps young people explore the world from an animal’s perspective.

Sessions can explore:

  • Understanding animals – Learn about the needs, behaviour, habitats and life cycles of different animals.
  • Kindness and empathy – Understand how animals experience the world and why kindness, compassion and respect matter.
  • Responsible pet ownership – Explore what it really means to care for a pet – from food, exercise and enrichment to health, safety and lifelong commitment.
  • Animal welfare – Understand what good welfare looks like and why animals need more than food and shelter to thrive.
  • Preventing cruelty and neglect – Learn how knowledge and responsible choices can help prevent animals experiencing suffering.
  • Being a voice for animals – Give young people the confidence to speak up for animals and encourage kindness within their families and communities.

PetKind in schools

Bringing animal welfare into the classroom

Our school sessions are designed to be engaging, interactive and curriculum-linked, helping teachers bring important animal welfare topics to life.

We can deliver:

  • Whole-school assemblies
An engaging introduction to animal welfare, kindness and responsible pet ownership.
  • Classroom workshops
Interactive sessions that allow pupils to explore animal welfare through discussion, activities and practical learning.
  • Curriculum-linked learning
PetKind can complement areas including Science, PSHE, Literacy and Art, while supporting wider learning around empathy, responsibility and citizenship.

Sessions can be adapted to suit the age and needs of the pupils taking part.

More than a lesson

Helping young people become animal champions

PetKind isn’t just about teaching children how to look after a pet. It’s about helping them understand why animals matter.

We want every young person who takes part to leave with:

  • More knowledge – Understanding what animals need to be healthy, happy and safe.
  • More confidence – Knowing how to make responsible choices around animals.
  • More empathy – Recognising that animals have their own needs, feelings and behaviours.
  • A stronger voice – Feeling able to speak up for animals and encourage kindness in others.

By reaching children early, we can help build positive attitudes towards animals that last a lifetime.

PetKind in our communities

Animal welfare education shouldn’t stop at the school gates

PetKind can also support community groups, youth organisations, family activities and local events.

We want to make animal welfare education accessible to people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

From community centres and village halls to youth groups and local events, PetKind can bring people together to learn, talk and share ideas about how we can create a kinder community for animals.

Why PetKind matters

Prevention is part of animal welfare

RSPCA Hull & East Riding cares for animals who have experienced cruelty, neglect and abandonment. Our Animal Rescue Centre provides specialist care and rehabilitation for some of the most vulnerable animals in our region. But our work cannot just be about responding when something has gone wrong.

We also need to help prevent animals from suffering in the first place. Education is one of the ways we can do that.

By helping people understand animals and their needs, we can encourage responsible ownership, challenge misconceptions and give the next generation the knowledge to make kinder choices.

PetKind is about changing lives today – and preventing suffering tomorrow.

The impact of PetKind

PetKind was launched by RSPCA Hull & East Riding in 2025. Since launching, the programme has reached hundreds of children across Hull and the East Riding, through school assemblies, classroom workshops and community activities.

The programme has been supported through local funding, including the Tedder Hill Wind Farm Fund and Lissett Wind Farm Fund, helping us take animal welfare education into East Riding communities.

But there is much more to do. With the support of schools, communities and local businesses, we want PetKind to reach more children, more families and more communities across Hull and the East Riding.
